Hyperscale Data Center is fully decarbonized using Renewable Natural Gas.
CLIENT NEED
Resiliency solution for San Jose Data Center that matches diesel technical performance but has significantly lower local emissions and is fully decarbonized.
SAN JOSE DATA CENTER
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Deal close: March 2022
Project Size: 60 MW
LOOKING AHEAD:
This client has communicated that the San Jose Data Center is establishing a template for future fully decarbonized data center microgrid deals with Enchanted Rock.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
- The client initially designed their San Jose Data Center to utilize diesel generators for back-up power. However, in order to meet their corporate mandate to move away from diesels and decarbonize, the client wanted to transition to natural gas.
- In order to maintain the data center design, Enchanted Rock had to fit 3MW natural gas generator cells into each diesel generator footprint.
- San Jose Data Center is comprised of two phases. Phase 1 is five 12MW colos, each colo containing four 3-MW cells, totaling 60MW. Phase 2 is three 12MW colos, for a total of 36 MW.
- This innovative, first-of-its-kind natural gas dual-purpose microgrid data center resiliency solution will come in at or below the cost of the original diesel and provide grid stability services back to PG&E and the California ISO.(Independent System Operator)
- Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) will be used to fully decarbonize the resiliency offering and grid stability services.
